Après son retour, Johnson a établi une « relation non conventionnelle » avec la femme d'affaires Minnie B. Ridley et l'a engagée pour l'aider dans la gestion de son studio à Salt Lake City. En 1917, il a liquidé ses biens et déménagé à San Jose, en Californie, pour vivre avec la famille Ridley, exploitant un autre studio photographique. Il est mort d'une crise cardiaque le 21 février 1926 et a été enterré dans ''Oak Hill Memorial Park''.
