Les parents de David Knights-Whittome étaient Joseph Whittome, un magasinier et pasteur baptiste, et Eunice Smith. Ils eurent 6 autres enfants, dont 3 moururent en bas âge.

David Knights-Whittome a travaillé à Hereford, Edmonton et Sutton. Parmi ses modèles on peut citer les rois Edward VII, George V, le Prince Edward, le roi Alphonse XIII d'Espagne, le roi Manuel II du Portugal, la reine Maud de Norvège, etc.
 
David Knights-Whittome a épousé Sarah Elizabeth « Bessie » Draper à Hertford le 4 juin 1907. Ils eurent deux fils, Maurice et Ronald. Lorsqu'il a pris sa retraite, le couple s'est installé à Saint-Albans, dont il devint conseiller municipal et maire en 1940-41. So, fils Ronald mourut en 1941, alors qu'il était commandant de bord au sein de la Royal Air Force, pendant la seconde guerre mondiale.
 
Il fut également unmembre de la [[Royal Photographic Society]] de 1896 à 1905. Sa collection de plaques et de tirages est conservée par le ''Sutton Local Studies & Archives Centre'' ; les négatifs ont été numérisés dans le cadre du projet ''Past on Glass'' financé à hauteur de 95 000 £ par le ''Heritage Lottery Fund''. Cinq de ses photos figurent dans la collection de la ''[[National Portrait Gallery, London|National Portrait Gallery]]'' à Londres.

Among his subjects were [[Edward VII]], [[George V]], Prince Edward (later [[Edward VIII]]), [[Alfonso XIII of Spain]], [[Manuel II of Portugal]] and [[Maud of Wales|Queen Maud of Norway]]. He was also one of the official photographers at Prince Edward's 1911 [[investiture of the Prince of Wales|investiture as Prince of Wales]] at [[Caernarfon Castle]].<ref name="MBtL" /> He was awarded a [[Royal Warrant of Appointment (United Kingdom)|Royal Warrant of Appointment]] in the same year.<ref name="MBtL" />
