Il reçut à [[New York]] le prix ''Time-Life Achievement'' en 2002. Son travail fait l'objet d'une exposition rétrospective majeure au [[Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris]] et à l'''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Center_of_Photography International Center of Photography]'' à [[New York]].
 
En [[2012 en photographie|2012]], son livre ''Vers l'Orient'', publié aux éditions Xavier Barral, qui rassemble une sélection de photographies prises lors d'un voyage de trois ans dans sept pays d'Asie ([[Turquie]], [[Inde]], [[Afghanistan]], [[Pakistan]], [[Iran]], [[Chine]] et [[Japon]]) entre [[1955]] et [[1958]], obtient le prestigieux [[prix Nadar]], décerné par [[Gens d'images]].
