English: Southeast corner of Fourth and Olive Streets including W.H. Markam Druggist and Thomas Easterly Photograph Gallery.
One of the pioneers of the daguerrotype, an early type of photography, Thomas Easterly came to St. Louis in spring 1847 and opened a gallery at 112 Glasgow Row. Meeting with success, Easterly came to own this gallery at the corner of 4th and Olive, having inherited it from John Ostrander, another daguerrean, who died in 1849. Easterly would become famous for taking pictures of members of the Sauk and Fox nation at the time of their relocation. He also documented each stage in the destruction of the “Big Mound,” one of 27 Mississippian mounds in the city of St. Louis, now all destroyed. Easterly also would be the first to use the daguerreotype process to capture lightening strikes. Title: Southeast corner of Fourth and Olive Streets including W.H.
