  • Scope and content: IN OCTOBER, 1972, A PIPELINE OF THE TEXAS-NEW MEXICO PIPELINE COMPANY BURST, RELEASING 285,000 GALLONS OF CRUDE OIL INTO THE SAN JUAN RIVER. THE OIL FLOWED OVER 200 MILES DOWNSTREAM BEFORE BEING CONTAINED BY A LOG BOOM IN MONUMENT VALLEY, UTAH.
    LATER, FLOOD CONDITIONS CAUSED MUCH OF THE OIL AND DEBRIS TO OVERFLOW INTO LAKE POWELL.
    THIS VIEW SHOWS THE BOOM SITE. TO THE RIGHT OF THE RIVER IS THE NAVAJO RESERVATION. TO THE LEFT ARE BLM LANDS.
