| Description |
English: Drawing of an early balance wheel and balance spring by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, inventor of the balance spring, published in his letter in the Journal des Sçavants of 25 February 1675. One of the first drawings showing his spiral balance spring, (G,H). Huygens called this particular design the 'pirouette'. Its innovative feature (which Huygens found to be impractical and abandoned) was the large gear (r,s) and pinion (t) between the balance wheel and escapement, an attempt to allow the balance wheel to make a wider swing. |
